The falcon represented the soul’s upward aspiration — the vehicle for carrying offerings into the unseen world. But to build it correctly, you needed to know things about area, proportion, and shape transformation that most of us never learn outside a university mathematics course.
Ask yourself this: could you, using only a rope, two pegs, and some stakes, construct a square whose area is exactly equal to a given circle? The Vedic priests could. And they left the instructions.
The Sulba Sutras describe a method for converting a square into a circle of identical area. The instruction is specific: take a quarter of the square’s diagonal and add it to the side. The resulting radius gives you a circle that closely matches the original square’s area. When you run the modern calculation, this method implies a value of pi around 3.088. Not perfect. But remarkably close for a technology built entirely on cord, peg, and careful human measurement. And they weren’t calling it pi. They had no symbol for it. But they used its functional reality with their hands every single day.
The more remarkable problem was this: how do you build an altar twice the size of an existing one? Not twice the length. Twice the area. This sounds simple until you try it. If you double the side of a square, you get four times the area, not two. The solution the Sulba Sutras provide is elegant: use the diagonal of the original square as the side of the new one. This works because the diagonal of a square with side length 1 is √2, and a square with side √2 has an area of exactly 2.

This is not intuitive work. It requires understanding how shapes relate — what mathematicians now call congruence and equivalence, and the conservation of area under geometric transformation.

The Vedic tradition simply found a way to make those truths visible — by building them, by inhabiting them, and by tying them to something that mattered deeply: the desire to reach beyond the ordinary world and touch something larger.
