In the ancient land of Vidarbha, there lived a princess named Rukmini. Daughter to King Bhishmaka, Rukmini wasn’t just any royal – she was drop-dead gorgeous, super smart, and known for her big heart. People often said she was the embodiment of Goddess Lakshmi, the divine consort of Lord Vishnu.
One fine day, Rukmini was at the temple of Goddess Ambika. There, she heard stories about Lord Krishna, the charismatic hero known for his incredible deeds and unbeatable charm. As she listened, she found herself completely smitten. She just knew that Krishna was the one for her. Lucky for Rukmini, her parents approved of her choice. They agreed that Krishna would make the perfect match.
However, not everyone was thrilled about this. Rukmini’s brother Rukmi, who had his own plans, wanted her to marry Shishupala, the prince of the Chedi Kingdom and Krishna’s cousin. Yikes! This created a rather sticky situation for poor Rukmini.
Determined to be with Krishna, Rukmini decided to take charge of her destiny. She penned a heartfelt letter to Krishna, gushing about her love for him and pleading him to whisk her away when she visited the temple of Goddess Ambika right before her unwanted wedding. She handed this crucial letter to a trusty Brahmin messenger, who set out to deliver it to Krishna in Dvaraka.
When Krishna got Rukmini’s letter, he was deeply touched. He knew he had to act fast, so he, along with his elder brother Balarama, zoomed off to Vidarbha. There, they found Rukmini at the temple, surrounded by relatives and suitors. Timing was everything now.
Krishna came up with a daring plan. Just as Rukmini was leaving the temple, he swooped in and abducted her right in front of her astonished suitors and relatives. Furious, Rukmi tried to stop him, leading to an intense battle. Of course, Krishna emerged victorious, but instead of killing Rukmi, he decided to let him live. He humiliated Rukmi by tying him up and trimming bits of his hair and mustache, making him look rather ridiculous.
With Rukmini safe, Krishna took her to Dvaraka. The two were married with all the proper Vedic rituals. Dvaraka burst into festivities, with citizens decked out in their finest attire, celebrating the joyous union. The love story of Krishna and Rukmini spread far and wide, becoming a legendary tale cherished by many.
Rukmini wasn’t just another wife; she was Krishna’s primary consort and the revered queen of Dvaraka. Despite Krishna having many wives, her devotion to him was unwavering. Their bond was a powerful example of enduring love.
Their life together was filled with happiness and children. Rukmini longed for a child, so Krishna, ever the loving husband, flew to Kailash on his mount Garuda to convey her wish to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva blessed her, promising that she would bear the new incarnation of Kamadeva, the god of love. Soon, Rukmini gave birth to Pradyumna. Over time, she and Krishna had ten sons, all of them growing up to be wise and strong.
